I haven't read the book... but I love the movie.
I love how much it portrayed what's really happening in reality and not some other fairy tale with a happy ending. Charlie's character wasn't introduced fully in the beginning... it was slowly revealed throughout the movie, which was good because it kept viewers curious and willing to finish the movie until the end.
Another good aspect is that it didn't focus on Romantic Love. It showed FRIENDSHIP in its true form... and how the best of friends can turn into a couple who can understand each other. It also showed FAMILY... how Charlie's parents and siblings stood by him when he started having problems.
I felt a tug in my chest when Charlie stood up for Candace when the guy with the ponytail hit her... and another tug when Charlie called Candace and she immediately sent for the police to go to him.
Then again, I take back what I said... The movie DID show love in its truest form - Patrick and Brad. At first I thought Brad was a jerk... until Charlie caught him with Patrick and their love story was told. My most favorite part? When Brad told Charlie "Thanks for stopping them," when Brad's friend beat up Patrick. That's where I felt the love.
My sister said the book was kind of dark so I'm glad I watched the movie first... now I have no idea what to expect from the book.
But if you haven't watched the movie yet, the money you spent will be worth it.
I rate it 4.5 stars out of 5. :)
