eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd
~Alexander Pope

The movie stars Jim Carrey (as Joel Barish) and Kate Winslet (as Clementine Kruczynski) who played a couple who dated for two years. After which, they had a lot of problems... and Clementine decided to erase Joel from her memory. Hurt and depressed, Joel decided to erase her from his memory too, going to a clinic called Lacuna that erases specific memories about a person.

At first I thought, Why would you want to erase someone from your memory? Wouldn't you still want to remember all those happy times in between the bad times? I have no regrets in my life. Everything that happened was mostly my choice... and I learned from my mistakes.

But, thinking again, how much would you give to get that inner peace when you erase every memory of a person who has hurt you the most? It would end illegitimate relationships... bitterness after a break-up so a couple can actually remain friends afterwards.

At the end of the movie, the tapes recorded by the patients of Lacuna were returned to them... and Joel and Clementine heard each other's reasons for wanting to forget. Joel said that he can't think of anything he doesn't like about Clementine. She said that eventually he will and it may end up bad just like it did before. And Joel just said one word that decided their fate: "Okay."

I loved that ending. It was like they knew that they will make the same mistakes all over again. They will fight again and may end up hurting each other again... but they both decided to stay together. Because they'd rather make the same mistakes together... than make different mistakes apart. And that is fate and destiny right there.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"... at first I didn't get what the title meant... until Mary (played by Kirsten Dunst) recited the complete quote by Alexander Pope. That was when I understood.

If you clean your mind of everything... make it spotless, you won't think of the past, or the present, or the future. There are no memories to go back to. There is just eternal happiness of reliving these memories over and over without having that fear of getting hurt. And I think I'd be happy with that.
