I like going to church on days other than Sundays. It's because there are less people... and I actually appreciate the silence of the church. I don't like going to mass either. It's too scripted for me. Don't get me wrong. I was born, baptized, and raised a Catholic. I've read the Bible. I know all the stories. I know all the responses to the words the priest says during a mass. I know enough religious songs. But I'm not really a very religious person. I believe in God with all my heart... but I lost faith in the church.
After my LET Review yesterday, I stopped to go to St. John the Evangelist Cathedral to offer some words of thanks to the Father. I expected the church to be almost empty... just like it was last week. But as I stepped in front of the gate, there were a lot of cars parked inside and a lot of people walking in. I was puzzled. Mass doesn't start until after an hour yet there were a lot of people. It also started to rain hard, so I ran to a nearby waiting shed and waited to see if the people will disperse soon. I turned out to be wrong.
As I was waiting for the rain to stop, a large group of people walked past me. They were headed by a nun and I realized a few moments later that most of them were students from nearby schools. They were holding posters that said "PROTECT THE LIFE IN THE WOMB." That was when I saw the huge tarp hanging from the Cathedral gates (I didn't see it at first because I was distracted by the heavy rain). It was the same words on the posters with a background of a photo of an pregnant woman holding her tummy. I just shook my head and went home.
It saddens me that so many people fail to understand the concept of the RH Bill. And I know that most of those people who continue to fight against it, do not fully understand it's true purpose. Ever since the bill was passed, the Catholic Church has been using all its forces to make sure it doesn't become a law... for the foolish reason that they think contraception is the same as abortion. *facepalms*
I feel the need to lecture them about how these terms are WAY different from each other. An egg cell doesn't have life yet, nor does a sperm cell. They each belong to the body from which they are produced.
CONTRACEPTION is preventing the sperm cell from fertilizing the egg cell by means of spermicide (destroying the sperm cell before it reaches the egg cell in the woman's fallopian tubes), by using barriers (such as the condom, which stops the sperm from entering the woman's reproductive system), or by contraceptive pills which inhibit the ovaries from producing egg cells. It is a PREVENTIVE method that could limit the occurrence of unwanted pregnancies, teenage pregnancies, or extra-marital pregnancies.
On the other hand, ABORTION is another story. When the egg cell is fertilized by the sperm cell, it divides and grows to become a zygote which will further grow to become a fetus inside the womb of the mother. This fetus is another life form. It is simply using the mother's body to get nourishment and gets ready for the life outside of the womb. However, if the pregnancy is unwanted, the mother may choose to remove the fetus from her womb, thus killing the baby inside her. THAT IS WHAT IS MORALLY UNACCEPTABLE. I hate abortion. I despise the person who ever first committed the first abortion, as it continues to this day.
And I reiterate, contraception is not the same as abortion.
The very aim of the Reproductive Health Bill is to promote contraception throughout the country and at the same time, avoid cases of unwanted pregnancies and even sexually transmitted diseases. This will encourage the use of contraceptive devices such as the condom, spermicides, contraceptive pills, and others.
However, as I have mentioned the Catholic Church continues to hinder the approval of the bill as they only approve of the natural methods of contraception: i.e. Calendar method, Symptothermal method, etc. which are not very effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies.
Some may think that this will promote sexual activity in the country. But if we stop and think, sexual activity has already been rampant all over the country... and the government is now addressing this problem with the Reproductive Health Bill.
We should be lucky. Considering a 90 million population in a land area of approximately 300,000 square kilometers, the Philippines is severely overpopulated. If we weren't a Catholic country, the One-child policy (such as that which was implemented in China) or the two-child policy (as implemented in Singapore) would have been implemented in our country years ago. That would most definitely legalize abortion.
To end this discussion, I ask the people of the Philippines to consider what is best for our country before participating in any movement against the RH Bill. It's purpose is pure and true and does not aim to violate any teachings of the Catholic Church... because when God said "Go forth and multiply," there were only two people on Earth... not 8 Billion.
