plagiarism of a blog in a speech
Right after the country has experienced the worse case of monsoon rains, the RH Bill issue is brought up once again. This time, it's a speech by Senator Tito Sotto that has the country in an uproar. Apparently, in a speech that was televised nationwide, Sotto quoted the blog of "Sarah, the healthy home economist" (a US-based writer who also opposes vaccines for children and offers recipes for goodies like grain-free pumpkin cookies) in his speech word-per-word and was accused of plagiarism. Here are excerpts of Sotto's speech which was quoted exactly from Sarah's blog: “According, to Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, the use of the pill also causes severe gut dysbiosis. What is worse, drug induced gut imbalance is especially intractable and resistant to treatment either with probiotics or diet change.” “Gut imbalance brought on through use of the pill negatively impacts the ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. As a result, even if a woman eats spectacularly well during pregnancy, if she has been taking oral contraceptives for a period of time beforehand, it is highly likely that she and her baby are not reaping the full benefits of all this healthy food as the lack of beneficial flora in her gut preclude this from occurring.” “Pathogenic, opportunistic flora that take hold in the gut when the pill is used constantly produce toxic substances which are the by-products of their metabolism. These toxins leak into the woman’s bloodstream and they have the potential to cross the placenta. Therefore, gut dysbiosis exposes the fetus to toxin.” “Not well known is also the fact that use of the pill depletes zinc in the body. Zinc is called 'the intelligence mineral' as it is intimately involved in mental development.” (Source: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/269929/news/nation/sotto-s-anti-rh-speech-copied-from-us-blogger-sotto-doesn-t-think-so) When Sotto was accused of plagiarizing the blog, he outright denied it while his staff (who compiled his whole speech from 5 different blogs) openly admitted to copying the speech. That was when I facepalmed so hard that I hurt myself in the process. "The evidence doesn't lie." That is one of my most favorite lines of Gil Grissom from CSI: Las Vegas. The evidence was already being waved in front of Sotto's face, the least he could do was be a man and admit what he did instead of denying it and having the whole country laugh at him. I saw this comment on the article from the same source I indicated above: "Sotto: Teacher, I wasn't cheating. I was just copying her answer, which is based on a book that we both studied." [Red Tani] I had to laugh out loud. So now Sotto is saying he and Sarah just made the same research and copied from the same source. I've seen college students make better excuses. haha. Anyway, there's one good thing that came out of this nationwide issue, the whole country learned the meaning of PLAGIARISM. I doubt other Filipinos will make the same mistake anytime soon. :D I rest my case. :)
