love is unconditional

I believe it is time for my views about SAME SEX MARRIAGE.

From a very young age, I have accepted the concepts of homosexuality. Maybe it's because it was introduced to me early... or maybe it's because I had a gay classmate when I was in the third grade. I don't really know the actual reason. But I never insulted the third sex in general. (I say "in general" because I may have insulted some who have done wrong to me and/or my loved ones. Just to make that clear)

Anyway, I had absolutely no idea about same sex relationships until high school. That was when it was slowly introduced to me by books, TV, magazines, etc. Again, I was okay with it. I was raised to have an open mind and not to judge people so I just went on with it. I have friends who had same sex relationships and I don't really care about that. They love those persons and that's what's important.

I got through college... and once again had friends who were in same sex relationships. Sometimes I got curious and I ask them why they prefer the same sex to the opposite sex. They said it's because they understand each other more. They know what to expect from each other and they understand more what the other is feeling... plus the bonus that they can't get pregnant even if they engage in any sexual activity.

It was then that I understood... it's not about sex. It's not about attraction... It's not about conforming to what society is dictating. It's about following your heart and doing what makes you happy. In their case, they found their happiness in their own persons, regardless of that person's sex organ. Whether male or female, they found that they could sit with that person in silence for no matter how long, and they will be at peace... they felt complete. They didn't feel alone. They felt love.

"So that's what true love is," I thought to myself after a bit more thinking. It's UNCONDITIONAL. I never really knew what that word meant before. It means accepting EVERYTHING about that person - both the good and the bad points - and not wanting to change any part of him/her. It's because one falls in love with a person, not because of one aspect, but because of that person as a whole.

Therefore, when I heard about a bill in the USA that will legalize same sex marriage in all states, I actually smiled. It's a step towards a society where homosexuals aren't judged or discriminated. Even if you turn the world upside down, they're still people. They just chose to love someone that they want to spend the rest of their lives with.

Personally, I was disappointed in one of my classes. I asked in an examination as an essay question: "Are you in favor of same sex marriage? Why or why not?"

90% of them answered NO... and almost ALL of those who disapproved gave the reason that "God made only man and woman and He said to them 'Go forth and multiply.' If they are both male or they are both female, they cannot produce children."

I realized that most of the young people today equate marriage with sex. I explained it as much as I can, but I didn't want to impose my principles unto them. I don't force people to think the way that I do. I just explain my opinion and move on. If they choose to share my beliefs with me, then it's awesome. But if not, then they still have a lot to learn in life.

Feel free to comment on my tagboard about this or any of my other blog entries. :D

“The thing about gay marriage is simply that it’s not gay. It’s marriage. If you are uncomfortable with marriage, you can not outlaw marriage. And, shocking, even if homosexuality makes someone uncomfortable, one can not outlaw identifying as or practicing homosexuality. So seeing as both homosexuality and marriage are legal, their being combined should be no big deal.”
